IN DIALOGUE WITH VERONICA

It's so lovely to connect with you Veronica! We are in love with your work and the dynamic spaces you create and curate.

I checked out MUNDO and want to know MORE MORE MORE. Can you share something with us that you want to share about the MUNDO project? There are so many things that I can ask but I really want to hear from you whatever you want to share.

MUNDO is a world within a world—a deeper look into my creative process. It’s where I gather my inspirations, sketchbooks, process videos, travel diaries, rituals, and a lot more. I wanted it to feel like a hidden universe, full of unexpected discoveries, where every door reveals something new. While it’s rooted in my own practice, my hope is that visitors leave feeling inspired, creatively charged, or even drawn to explore their own world in a new way.

Does your childhood inspire your work at all?

In some ways, yes. But I also feel that becoming a mom has played a significant role in guiding me creatively. I’m nurturing my own inner child while reminding myself to bring playfulness into my work. My father passed away when I was very young, so I had to grow up quickly, emotionally. Now, as a mother, I get to reconnect with my childhood—but through the lens of my daughter, experiencing it in a new light, with a lot of innocence and joy.One of my spiritual readers often urges me to tap into the pain of those early years and create from those tender places. It’s not always easy to articulate, but it’s something that continues to unfold.

When did you start making with your hands? Do you have any memories of realising the power you have in your hands?

My grandmother taught me how to sew and embroider—whether it was making clothes for my Barbies or helping her stitch dinner napkins. I’ve been creating with my hands for as long as I can remember. After high school, I briefly considered pursuing Fashion Design, but the universe had other plans, leading me down a path into music and eventually opening a hybrid retail store and gallery. While I was still deeply involved in the creative world, my role shifted from creating to supporting and serving other artists. It wasn’t until I closed my store in 2019 that I found myself reconnecting with that inner drive to make things again. I signed up for a ceramics hand-building course and the moment I touched the clay, I could feel it vibrating—that was a clear sign.

I have read a little bit about your inspiration and one of them I read is your ancestral history. How did you start learning about your ancestral history?

It’s always been something that’s been instilled in me from a young age. My Tía Esperanza—a proud Chicana militant in her teens—would tell us stories about Mexican revolutionaries, César Chávez, Dolores Huerta. She gave my siblings and me books on Chicanismo and always reminded us to return to our Indigenous roots. She’s been a steady source of inspiration throughout my life.

Because my family moved north in the ’70s—crossing what is now called the U.S.-Mexico border—there was a strong pressure to assimilate. Without my Tía and my Grandmother keeping our stories and cultural practices alive, much of that history might have been lost or forgotten.

Now, my younger sister Lizet is diving even deeper—tracing our family tree and uncovering more of our ancestral roots. Their efforts have helped me stay connected to that part of myself, even during times when I wasn’t sure how to express it through my creative work.Only recently have I begun to bring that history into my practice.

What is a story about your family / lineage / ancestry that you hold dear to you? I am sure there are many!

I’m so fascinated by my grandmother’s birth stories—she had 13 children in total. The first two were boys, but both passed away in infancy. Her third child, a daughter, survived, and then she had another son who also passed shortly after birth. After that, she went on to have nine daughters in a row—raising ten girls altogether, which is incredible when I think about the endurance that took.

She was the true matriarch of our family, and she just passed away three weeks ago at the age of 95. Her presence is still very much alive. Needless to say, the women in my family—my mom and my tías—are deeply rooted, fiercely resilient, and strong-willed. I draw so much of my own strength and drive from them. Their stories, their sacrifices, and their spirit are a huge part of who I am.

How do you come up with your ideas?
Do you sketch? Collage / scrapbook?

I mostly collage and create mood boards—it’s how I gather visual language and emotion before I enter the making phase. But once I’m in the studio, I really lean into intuition. Before I begin each work day, I light incense and smudge with Sweetgrass—offerings to call in my ancestors for guidance and protection. From there, the process becomes more spiritual. Sometimes ideas come through as downloads from beyond—I’ll hear a word, a name, or get a feeling that shapes the direction of the work. It’s not always linear, but it’s always led by something deeper than me.

Do you ever look back at the trajectory of your work ? Like what pieces Veronica was making 5 years ago ? 10 years ago! 20 years ago! What did you think?

Sometimes I laugh and cringe a little when I think about some of the choices I made, but every piece contributes to the kaleidoscope of who I am. I’m appreciative of the many different lives I’ve lived in such a short time. I try to approach everything with honesty, so my past work reflects where I was and who I was at the time. Looking back, I feel more gratitude than anything, because those experiences have led me to where I am now…the cycle continues.

Thank you so much for chatting with us Veronica! We can´t wait to continue watching all the spaces you are creating and interacting with. xo
